About Yahoo! Japan

Yahoo! Japan should not be confused with Yahoo! that is based in the USA. Yahoo! US is a separate entity owned by Apollo Global Management. While Yahoo! Japan is a subsidiary of Z Holdings Corporation.

Z Holdings started as joint venture between South Korean tech giant Naver and the SoftBank Group, after merger of messaging app Line Corporation and Yahoo! Japan. Naver and SoftBank group owns 50% stake each in A holdings and A holdings owns majority stake in Z Holdings.

The reason of shut down is said to be the data policy of EU, such as GDPR. As Yahoo! Japan offers most of its services in Japanese language. The users-base of its services in European Union and UK is not huge enough to cover the cost of abiding European Data Protection Law.
